SUMMARY:Memorial Park's 75th Anniversary Celebration & Re-dedication
DESCRIPTION:1:30pm Start\n2:00pm Ceremony\n\nIn celebration of Memorial Park’s 75th Anniversary\, the Omaha Parks Foundation in cooperation with the City of Omaha plan to bring the statue “Embracing Peace” to the park from May-November 2023.\n\nAbout Memorial Park\nMemorial Park was the brainchild of Mrs. Lu N. Broad who engaged community leaders such as Henry Doorly\, Robert Storz\, and Leo A. Daly to help secure the 65-acre tract of land to become the site of a permanent tribute for the men and women who serve our country in the U.S. Military.  On June 5th\, 1948\, President Harry S. Truman came to Omaha and formally dedicated the World War II Memorial Park.\n\nAbout The Sculpture\n\n\nThis sculpture\, “Embracing Peace” by famous artist Seward Johnson\, resembles the iconic photograph of sailor kissing the nurse in Times Square on VJ Day. Seward created the piece to pay homage to the veterans of World War II. This artwork honors the memory of the past\, reminding us of the sacrifice of a nation\, and awakens a younger generation to a turning point in our nation’s history. Seward Johnson has stated\, “I wanted to evoke a time of unity\, a time without the divisiveness of today. The moment captured in the work encapsulates the spirit of having fought a successful campaign defending human rights\, our shared values and that celebrates peace.” Seward Johnson served for 4 years in the US Navy during the Korean War\, aboard the USS Gloucester (PF-22). This experience was an inflection point in his life that instilled the ideas of collaboration and working as a unified community. There will be many events throughout the exhibition of this work to gather\, to create\, to honor\, and to celebrate as a community.

SUMMARY:Honoring 75 Years - The History of Omaha's World War II Memorial Park Exhibit at the Durham Museum
DESCRIPTION:America entered World War II following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7\, 1941. Before the outcome of the war was even assured\, in 1943 Mrs. Lulu N. Broad\, owner of the Gypsy Tea House\, wrote a letter to Henry Doorly\, publisher of the Omaha World-Herald\, suggesting construction of a memorial for Douglas County area service men and women. \nAfter nearly a year of study by Omaha civic leaders\, the World War Memorial Association\, a charitable corporation\, was formed and suggested the 65-acre tract of land formerly occupied by the Happy Hollow Country Club and later\, the Dundee golf course\, to become the site of a permanent tribute for those men and women who served our country in the U.S. military. \nOn June 5\, 1948\, one day before the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Normandy (“D-Day”) the citizens of Omaha welcomed President Harry S. Truman to formally dedicate World War II Memorial Park to the people of Douglas County. \nThe Durham Museum is proud to partner with the Omaha Parks Foundation to highlight the 75th anniversary of this Omaha landmark. \nTo learn more about the 75th anniversary celebration visit omahaparksfoundation.org/memorial-park-75

SUMMARY:Parkside Park South Inflatable Display Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Bring out your family to Parkside Park South and meet with your neighbors while raising money to make a meaningful improvement to our community! You and your family can walk through a display of holiday inflatables lined along the path. \nDONATIONS \nSuggested donation is $5/person (cash\, check or PayPal) to view the display.\nDonate Online\n \nFOOD \nWe will have two food trucks Carousel’s of West Omaha & Chicago Dog 42 set up on Pine Street at the park entrance. A portion of their sales for the night will go back to the park\, so please come hungry! \nFUNDRAISER FOR: \nThe Montclair Trendwood Parkside Georgetowne Neighborhoods have a diverse population with people of all ages using our trails and green spaces. However\, the playground at Parkside Park is significantly underutilized due to its out-of-date nature and poor maintenance. \nAnother concern we hope to address with a playground upgrade is safety. Parkside Park sits off the street and visibility is hindered by many trees. As a result\, our Citizen Patrol has found that this has provided an opportunity for unsavory behavior. Our hope is that a new\, more frequently used\, park will detract from these types of activities and increase the overall safety of our neighborhood. \nA new park will create an inviting space where MTPG residents can gather\, children can play safely and effectively while enjoying the natural beauty around it. Not only will this enhance the quality of life for the neighborhood youth\, but will spur communal interaction\, strengthen property values\, and pride within the MTPG Neighborhoods.
