Navy's USS Omaha destined for new memorial park

See the video on KETV.

Key pieces of a U.S. Navy submarine that once patrolled the oceans are now destined for a new memorial in Omaha.

Omaha Parks Foundation is planning to create a replica of the USS Omaha submarine for a new memorial park next to Eppley Airfield in Levi Carter Park.

“This will be a tribute to our servicemen and women,” said Amber Miller, executive director.

When the USS Omaha was retired, the sail and rudder were saved and stored. The city has been working for the last three years to bring them to the heartland.

Miller is heading a campaign to raise $1 million to integrate those real-life pieces with a full-length, 362-foot concrete footprint of the submarine. Crews have already staked out the outline of the submarine at Levi Carter Park, with the stern pointing to the south and the bow pointing to the north.

“When complete, you will see a replica of the submarine as if it were surfaced on the water,” Miller said.

The Navy's former USS Omaha submarine was in service from 1976-1995. It was used in the Cold War and was part of a class of nuclear-powered attack submarines that starred in the movie “Hunt for Red October.”

Miller said memorial would be used for ceremonies and community events.

“There will be several areas that will be dedicated for donor plaques, bricks,” Miller said.

The Parks Foundation is planning to kick off its fundraising efforts with a ceremony at the park Friday at 3 p.m. The Parks Department has already pledged $250,000 to jump-start the campaign.

The foundation hopes to complete the memorial within three years.

GroundBreaking Ceremony for USS Omaha (SSN 692) April 19 at 3:00pm

The submarine USS Omaha (SSN 692) served on the front lines of the Cold War from 1978 to 1995. After the submarine had completed its service life, it was decommissioned and dismantled for scrap. The City of Omaha has an opportunity to resurrect the Omaha as a memorial to the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and guardsmen who served our country, sometimes thanklessly, during the years since the end of World War II.

The most recognizable portions of the USS Omaha, the sail and rudder, were reserved for possible use as a memorial to Omaha, Nebraska and Iowa veterans. Several local veterans’ organizations have partnered with the City of Omaha and the Omaha Parks Foundation to erect a permanent, memorial display of the decommissioned US Navy submarine USS Omaha (SSN-692).

The USS Omaha Memorial will be built at the southeast entrance to Levi Carter Park. This premier location is near Eppley Airfield, on Abbott Drive and accessible to the entire metro area

Neighbors Rally to Update Playgrounds

A number of Omaha playgrounds are in need of repair, but overhauling them would come at a cost of $100,000 a piece. That’s not in the city’s budget.

But some neighborhoods are working with the Omaha Parks Foundation to raise money for improvements. The Parks and Recreation Department gave the non-profit foundation a list of the 15 “worst” playgrounds, so to speak.

Omaha bank digs deep to replace city park's battered trees

One by one, the City of Omaha is trying to replace the trees destroyed by floodwaters last year at N.P. Dodge Park.

The effort, led by the Omaha Parks Foundation, was launched with a $10,000 donation from First National Bank of Omaha. That money helped city crews replace about 45 trees and restore the entry area of the park along the river. In total, workers have planted 80 new trees.
